Description And Operation: Overview
There are two variants that are available on the Ingenium I4 2.0L Diesel turbocharger system:
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Diesel 163PS and 180PS engines - Vehicles with single turbocharger
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Diesel 240PS engine - Vehicles with series sequential twin turbocharger
The single turbocharger variants use a single turbocharger with a Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT). The twin turbocharger variant comprises a High Pressure (HP) turbocharger with a VGT and a Low Pressure (LP) fixed turbocharger.
On the twin turbocharger variant, both turbochargers are used in a series sequential twin turbocharging system. The gas flow between the turbochargers is controlled using bypass valves whose operation modes are based on the engine speed and load. This enables the engine to achieve quick throttle response at low engine speeds and efficient use of exhaust gas energy at high engine speeds.
The HP turbocharger operates through the entire engine speed range. As engine speed increases, the LP turbocharger comes into operation with both of the turbochargers running in a series sequential twin turbocharger mode. At high engine speed the boost pressure is produced entirely by the LP turbocharger.
The turbocharger comprises a radial turbine and a centrifugal compressor on a single shaft. The shaft and wheels are supported by two, radial semi-floating bearings and a single thrust bearing.
The turbochargers are connected by the charge air ducts of the intake air distribution and filtering system. For additional information, refer to: Intake Air Distribution and Filtering .
The turbocharger cooling is achieved using engine oil to allow it to maintain the optimum operating temperature and protect the bearings from overheating. In addition, the LP turbocharger compressor is cooled by the engine cooling system.
