Pinpoint Test F: Active Grille Air Shutter Movement Obstructed

NOTE: Some of the images shown below may show another vehicle and may not correspond to the layout of the vehicle being worked on
  1. F1: IDENTIFICATION OF WHICH ACTIVE GRILLE IS OBSTRUCTED TEST

    1. Set the vehicle into active grille wash mode sequence by starting the engine, set the vehicle into sand mode. After 20 seconds the active grille will open. Repeat this process to replicate the "clonk" noise and (using a flash light to look through the front bumper grilles) visually check the operation of the upper and lower active grille air shutters to confirm which active vane is being obstructed.

      Does the upper active grille appear to be being obstructed?

      Yes  : If the upper  active grille appears to be obstructed GO to F2.

      No  : If the lower  active grille appears to be obstructed GO to  F3.

  2. F2: REPAIR PROCESS FOR THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE 

    TEST CONDITIONS

    1. Remove the front bumper radiator grille for access only (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER - steps 1 to 13)

    2. Remove the upper active grille for access only

    3. Rectify the obstruction making sure the radiator shroud is properly hooked into the armature and that the top is not positioned in such a way as to obstruct the radiator (see illustration)

    4. NOTE: In different vehicles (for example, L663), the radiator shroud may not have the moulded hook installed. If that is the case, use plastic cable ties to secure it against the armature (as illustrated)
    5. Before re-installing the front bumper, repeat Step F1 (see above) to confirm if the active grille is now working properly

      Is the active grille now working properly?

      Yes  : Re-install the front armature and front bumper (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER )

      No  : Replace the upper active grille. Retest. If issue is resolved, re-install the front armature and front bumper (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER )

  3. F3: REPAIR PROCESS FOR THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE 
    1. Remove the front bumper radiator grille for access only (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER - steps 1 to 13)

    2. Rectify the obstruction by pushing down the shroud lower lip making sure it sits properly on the active grille mould (as illustrated)
    3. Before re-installing the front bumper, repeat Step F1 (see above) to confirm if the active grille is now working properly

      Is the active grille now working properly?

      Yes  : Re-install the front bumper (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER )

      No  : Replace the lower active grille. Retest. If issue is resolved, re-install the front bumper (see TOPIx workshop service information, article FRONT BUMPER )
