Removal And Installation: Removal

WARNING: This procedure involves fuel handling. Be prepared for fuel spillage at all times and always observe fuel handling precautions. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
  • Check all timing components for wear and install new components if required.
  • Removal steps in this procedure contains installation details.
  • Make sure that all openings are sealed. Use new blanking caps.
NOTE: Some variation in the illustrations may occur, but the essential information is always correct.
  1. Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
  2. Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE - GTDI 2.0L PETROL/V6 S/C 3.0L PETROL/V8 5.0L PETROL/V8 S/C 5.0L PETROL .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

    Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  4. WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.

    Raise and support the vehicle.

  5. Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING (G1269230) .
  6. Refer to: AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE T-CONNECTOR (G1549760) (Removal And Installation).

  8. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    • Make sure that all openings are sealed. Use new blanking caps.

  15. WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable vapors are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    • Make sure that all openings are sealed. Use new blanking caps.
    • This fuel pipe can be re-used, inspect for signs of damage. Renew if necessary.

    Remove the FEAD belt.

  22. WARNING: The wheel and tire assembly will be heavy.
    NOTE:
    • Note the position of the component before removal.

    Remove the right-hand front wheel and tire.

  31. CAUTION: Use a wooden block to protect the oil pan when supporting the engine.

    Using a suitable hydraulic jack, support the engine.

    Remove the component.

  33. CAUTION:
    • Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel supply lines.
    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    • Make sure that all openings are sealed. Use new blanking caps.

    • Do not fully install the component at this stage.
    • Do not remove the blanking caps at this stage.

    Install the component.

    Torque Specifications: 48 Nm

    • Only rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
    • Rotate the engine to the positions indicated.

    The engine is now in the timed position.

    Remove the crankshaft position sensor.

  60. CAUTION: Only tighten the bolt finger-tight.

    Make sure that the special tool is correctly located.

    Special Tool(s):  303-1447

    Install the crankshaft position sensor.

    Torque Specifications: 10 Nm 

  63. NOTE:
    • Only rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
    • Rotate the engine to the positions indicated.

    Rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees.

  64. CAUTION: Do not tension the tie strap at this stage.
    NOTE: Right side.

    Install the tie strap loose at this stage in the positions indicated.

    • Note the orientation of the tie strap in the illustration before applying tension.
    • Make sure the tension is maintained on the timing chain.

    Remove the timing chain tensioner.

  69. CAUTION: If a new timing component is to be installed, then components labelled 2 in the illustration, must be installed (as this is the latest version of the timing components). Do not attempt to install the components labelled 1, as damage to the engine may occur.

    The differences and orientation of the timing components can be seen. Original components (1) new components (2). The original timing chain tensioner (1) is angled, the new timing chain tensioner (2) is not angled.

    Install the timing chain tensioner. Do not release the pin at this stage.

    Torque Specifications: 12 Nm
