Removal And Installation: Removal

WARNING: Observe due care when working near a hot exhaust system.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustration depending on the vehicle specification, but essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

All vehicles 

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift. Refer to: Lifting .

    General Equipment:  Two-post lift

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

    Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  3. Remove the exhaust system.

    Refer to: Exhaust System .

  4. Disconnect the heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) sensor.

  5. Remove the 2 heat shield bolts and then remove the heat shield.

    NAS vehicles 

  6. Remove the catalytic converter upper heat shields.
    NOTE: This step is only required to be carried out on SULEV vehicles.

    • Disconnect the post-catalytic converter exhaust gas temperature sensor electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the pre-catalytic converter exhaust gas temperature sensor electrical connector.
    • Release the sensor wiring from the 3 retaining clips.

    Non NAS vehicles

    • Disconnect the pre-catalytic converter exhaust gas temperature sensor electrical connector.
    • Release the sensor wiring from the retaining clip.

    All vehicles 

  9. Remove the 2 bellyband bolts securing the catalyst converter to the transmission bracket.

  10. NOTE:
    • Discard the exhaust clamp after removal.
    • Remove and discard the gasket.

    • Release the exhaust clamp.
    • The exhaust clamp is spot welded into position and will require removal with the use of a grinder or a drill.
    • Remove the catalytic converter.

    NAS vehicles 

  11. Remove the 3 exhaust sensors from the catalytic converter assembly.
    NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    Non NAS vehicles

  12. Remove the 2 exhaust sensors from the catalytic converter assembly.

    Special Tool(s):  310-121
