- Check the condition and color of the spark plugs

| Poor idling |
- Air intake system leak
- Cylinder compression (s) low
- Valve clearances incorrect
- Spark plug (s) fouled
- Exhaust system restricted or blocked

NOTE:
- A vacuum gauge check may aid fault diagnosis (refer to component tests in this section).
- Datalogger signal(s) for Short Term Fuel Trim can be used to aid fault diagnosis:
- Readings up to 10% may be considered as acceptable
- Positive readings of between 10% and 20%: Check the air intake system for leaks
- Negative readings of between 10% and 20%: Check for over fuelling (for example, leaking injectors, high fuel pressure)
- Readings above 20%: Check for DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC Index
- Check the air intake system for leaks
- Perform a compression test (refer to component tests in this section)
- Check the valve clearances and adjust as necessary
- Check the condition and color of the spark plugs
- Check the exhaust system, including the catalytic converter, for restrictions and blockages
