General Procedures: Cleaning

WARNING:
  • Do not use compressed air to clean brake components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.
  • Brake discs must be renewed in axle sets only. Failure to follow this instruction may result in braking efficiency being impaired.
CAUTION: Take care not to contaminate the brake pad friction materials or the brake discs.
NOTE: To maintain braking performance the discs should be cleaned after every brake pad installment.
  1. Refer to: Brake Disc - XK-RS GT (Front - Vehicles With: Carbon Ceramic Brakes, Removal and Installation).

    Using a non-metallic tool clean out all the cross drilled holes.

    Using a non-metallic tool clean out all the vents.

  4. CAUTION:
    • Do not use Trichlorethane to clean the brake disc.
    • Do not over soak the brake disc

    1. Using fine sandpaper lightly sand the surface of the brake disc.
    2. Using acetone solvents or alcohol clean the brake disc.
    3. Using a clean cloth wipe the surface of the brake disc.

    INSPECTION 

  5. Normal brake disc condition.

    1. Brake disc surface after bedding in procedure.
    2. Brake disc surface after 124 miles (200 km) hard use (race/track).
    3. Brake disc surface after 310 miles (500 km) hard use (race/track).
    4. Brake disc surface after 621 miles (1000 km) hard use (race/track).
    WARNING: A new brake disc must be installed if any of the following defects are found.

    • Example of a brake disc at the end of its serviceable life.

    Excessive wear of the brake pads, to the point of the pad back plate making contact with the brake disc.

    • Unused brake disc - surface cracking.
    • Bedded brake disc - surface cracking.
    • Inner diameter cracking.

    Damage to the brake disc ventilation channels.

    1. Maximum width allowed = 4 mm.
    2. Maximum depth allowed = 4 mm.
    3. Maximum length allowed = 20 mm.
    4. Maximum area (projected on the braking surface) = 40 mm2 .
    5. Maximum. number of chips allowed = 3.
  11. NOTE: In order to minimise measurement errors when evaluating the brake disc weight loss the following processes must be followed prior to weighing the brake disc.
    1. Thoroughly clean the brake disc including clearing the cooling vents and cleaning the bell section.
    2. If the brake disc has been subject to wet conditions allow drying time (release of moisture from the disc material).

    • New brake disc weight.
    • Minimum brake disc weight.
  13. NOTE: Unlike cast iron brake discs the thickness of the brake disc is not indicative of the wear level. However, the brake disc minimum thickness can be measured. The minimum thickness of the brake disc must always be measured along the base of the inner and outer edge of the friction surface. Brake disc thickness is 38 mm+/- 0.1 mm. The maximum brake disc wear limit is 0.5mm

    2. (B) = Maximum wear limit = 0.5 mm.
    WARNING: A new brake disc must be installed if any of the following defects are found.
