Engine Cooling - Overview (G1772502): Overview
The engine cooling system maintains the engine within an optimum temperature range under changing ambient and engine operating conditions. The system is a pressurized expansion tank system with continuous bleeds to separate air from the coolant and prevent the formation of air locks. The engine cooling system also provides:
- Heating for:
- The passenger compartment.
Refer to: Heating and Ventilation Description And Operation .
- The throttle body.
- The passenger compartment.
- Cooling for:
- The engine oil cooler. For additional information, refer to:Engine V8 N/A 5.0L Petrol Description And Operation
- The ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) cooler.
Refer to: Transmission Cooling Description And Operation .
The primary components of the engine cooling system are the:
- Coolant pump.
- Thermostat.
- Radiator.
- Electric cooling fan.
- Expansion tank.
- Engine oil cooler.
- Outlet tube and heater manifold.
- Connecting hoses and pipes.
Auxiliary radiator(s) are installed on some vehicles to increase the engine cooling capacity: Two radiators on all 5.0L vehicles in the hot market; one radiator on 5.0L S/C vehicles only, in all other markets.
In cold climate markets, an optional block heater is available as a dealer fit accessory. The block heater is located in the cylinder block and is connected to a power supply via an external plug.
