Brake Booster - Overview (G970081): Overview

Power assistance for the braking system is provided by a vacuum brake booster. The unit increases the input load by a ratio of 6.2: 1. The vacuum brake booster is secured to the driver's side of the engine compartment bulkhead by four studs and nuts.

The vacuum brake booster and master cylinder assembly is fitted in the engine compartment. A two piece plastic vacuum pipe connects the brake booster to the engine mounted vacuum pump to provide the necessary vacuum to the booster.

The input push rod within the brake booster is connected to the brake pedal lever. Initially, any effort applied by the driver is increased by pedal ratio which is transferred to the input push rod. This load is further increased by the booster. The increased load is applied to the primary piston of the master cylinder via the output pushrod of the booster. Hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder is then applied to the brakes.
