Pinpoint Test A: Steering Column Noise - Noise Specific Diagnostics (Clonk/Column Knock)

- A1: CHECK FOR CLONK/COLUMN KNOCK NOISE FROM LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT
- Disconnect the lower steering column universal joint from the steering rack input shaft
- Discard the screw fixings
- Rotate the lower steering column shaft between 90 and 180 degrees
- Ascertain the specific type of noise present in the power steering system (see glossary of noise terms above)
- Rotate lower steering column shaft to its original position. Failure to do this could lead to damage to the clock spring and misalignment of the steering wheel
Is there a clonk/column knock noise as the lower steering column shaft is rotated?
- Yes : Replace the lower steering column universal joint, lower steering column or upper column as appropriate. For removal and installation of Steering Column & Steering Column Flexible Coupling refer to Steering Column Lower Shaft When all remedial actions have been completed, perform final checks for steering system noise, GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
- No : Reconnect steering column using a new screw and refer to Pinpoint Test A: Heavy Steering/Steering Requires Uneven Effort -- Steering System Free Play Checks And Ball Joint Inspection
