Battery Transit Relay Removal And Battery Re-Connection: Notes
A transit relay is fitted to the battery. This allows the vehicle to be driven when necessary, but isolates the vehicles electrical systems during transit and storage to prevent the battery becoming discharged.
The transit relay is connected to the battery to reduce voltage loss and prevent the battery becoming discharged. This allows the vehicle to be driven when necessary, but isolates the battery from the vehicle during transit and storage.
The PDI checks specified in this document can be carried out with the transit relay fitted and the ignition switched on (where applicable). The ignition should NOT be left on for extended periods.
- Damage to equipment. Failure to remove the transit relay before carrying out the PDI checks may result in damage to SDD equipment.
Before disconnecting the battery, make sure the ignition is switched off and the key transmitter has been removed from the docking station for at least 20 seconds. Allow a minimum interval of 20 seconds from battery disconnection to battery re-connection.
- Damage to vehicle. Do not disconnect the battery while the ignition is switched on:
- Electrical modules will not be allowed to shut down correctly and will result in fault codes being stored and spurious faults being induced.
- Permanent damage to the instrument cluster may also result if the battery is disconnected with the ignition switched on.
When reconnecting a battery cable, make sure the operation is carried out in one clean connection to avoid creating electrical 'spikes' in the system.
To remove the transit relay:
- Open the luggage compartment and gain access to the battery (the luggage compartment forward trim panel is already removed during the battery condition test).
- Make sure the ignition is switched off and the key transmitter is removed from the docking station.
- Wait at least 30 seconds before the following disconnection step.
- Undo the BMS (Battery Monitoring System) from the battery negative terminal and lift the BMS module away from the battery terminal.
- Disconnect the two way electrical connector from the BMS module.
- Stow the BMS module in a secure position to prevent it from touching the battery negative terminal while work is in progress.
- Remove the two way connector (1) from the transit relay and stow permanently in the socket provided on the DVD tray (2) as shown.
- Disconnect the battery positive lug (3) from the transit relay.
- Using a 10mm spanner, remove screw (4) securing the transit relay to the battery terminal, remove the transit relay and discard.
- Connect the battery positive lead to the battery positive terminal (5), tighten the terminal pinch bolt to 6 Nm.
- Reconnect the temporarily stored two way harness connector to the BMS module.
- Connect the BMS module to the battery negative terminal and tighten the pinch bolt to a torque specification of 6 Nm.
- Install the luggage compartment forward trim panel (and luggage separator - Convertible model).
- Remove the transit relay tag label from the air vent and discard.
