Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair


Remove driveshaft, transmission and bellhousing from vehicle.
Secure flywheel, then remove torque converter attaching bolts.

NOTE: Make a note of the position of any balance weights fitted to the flywheel/drive plate.

Rear Main Seal Housing:





Remove the rear oil seal housing securing bolts (1) and remove the housing (2).
Carefully remove the old rear oil seal from the housing, clean the housing and lubricate the seal mounting face.

DO NOT REMOVE THE PLASTIC O-RING PROTECTOR FROM THE NEW SEAL PRIOR TO FITTING TO THE HOUSING.

Rear Main Seal Refitting:





Fit the new seal (3) to the housing (4) using tool JD550-3(1) and 18G 134(2).

Rear Seal Plastic Protector:





Smear the gasket face with 'Hylosil 102' or equivalent, and locate the plastic O-ring protector (1) on to the end of the crankshaft (2).
Push the rear seal housing (3) over the crankshaft and up to the rear cylinder block face.
Remove the plastic O-ring protector.
Fit and torque tighten the housing securing bolts.
