Diagnostic Procedure

  1. If SIR diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SRS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Use scan tool DATA LIST function to read and record driver deployment loop resistance. If resistance is greater than 4.4 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 4.4 ohms or less, go to SDM INTEGRITY CHECK .
  3. Turn ignition off. Ensure driver-side air bag Yellow 2-pin connector, located at base of steering column is seated properly. If okay, go to next step. If not seated properly, correct and go to step  8.
  4. Disconnect and inspect SRS coil Yellow 2-pin connector, located at base of steering column. If connector is okay, reconnect and turn ignition on. If DTC 21 is current, go to next step. If DTC 21 is not current, turn ignition off and go to step  8.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag Yellow 2-pin connectors located at base of steering column and behind glove box assembly. Connect SRS Driver/Passenger Load Tool (J-41433) and appropriate adapters to driver-side and passenger-side air bag assembly harness connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC 21 is current, go to next step. If DTC 21 is not current, go to step  7.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Terminal Adapter Kit (J-35616-A) when performing electrical tests.
  6. Turn ignition off. Using digital multimeter in high resolution mode, check for increased resistance in driver-side inflator deployment loop circuits IB05 (Yellow wire) and IB06 (Yellow/Black wire) and SDM connector terminals No. 3 (Yellow wire) and 4 (Yellow/Black wire). See Figure. If a fault is found, replace SRS harness and go to step  8. If a fault is not found, go to SDM INTEGRITY CHECK .
  7. Disconnect SRS driver/passenger load tool from SRS coil assembly harness connector. Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG ASSEMBLIES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect SRS driver/passenger load tool to Yellow 2-pin connector, located on top of steering column. Reconnect SRS coil assembly harness connector at base of steering column. Turn ignition on. If DTC 21 is current, turn ignition off. Replace SRS coil assembly. See SRS COIL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step. If DTC 21 is not current, replace driver-side air bag. See AIR BAG ASSEMBLIES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all SRS components. Ensure all components are properly mounted. Using scan tool, clear DTC's. Go to SRS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
