Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Replace brake shoes if lining thickness is less than .039" (1.0 mm). Apply high temperature brake grease to sliding surfaces of backing plate, wheel cylinder piston shoe slots and anchors. Install parking brake lever, wave washer and retainer. See Figure.
  2. Install the trailing shoe assembly with parking brake lever. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Install the hold-down pin (16) and hold-down spring with cup (3).
  3. Install upper (inner) return spring. Install leading shoe assembly with upper (inner) return spring. Install adjuster assembly. Install the hold-down pin (15) and hold-down spring with cups (4).
  4. Using brake spring tool, install the lower return spring. Install auto adjuster lever. Using brake spring tool, install upper (outer) return spring. Install brake drum. Adjust the brakes. See PARKING BRAKE (REAR DRUM)  under ADJUSTMENTS. Install the rear wheels.
