A/T Gear Position Switch Test

  1. Disconnect 10-pin A/T gear position switch harness connector, located on side of transaxle. Check continuity between each switch terminals in specified shift lever positions. See Fig 1 . Adjust gear position switch as necessary. To adjust gear position switch, go to next step.
  2. Place transaxle in Neutral position. Remove gear position switch from transaxle. Ensure control shaft in transaxle is in Neutral position. Set gear position switch in Neutral. Switch will click if moved to Neutral position.
  3. Install gear position switch on transaxle control shaft. Reconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move shift lever through all gear positions and check if gear position switch synchronizes with indicator on instrument cluster. If gear position is synchronized, go to next step. If switch position is not synchronized, repeat step  1 .
  4. Start engine and move shift lever through all gears. Turn engine off. Ensure engine will not start in any other gear positions except "P" (Park) or "N" (Neutral). Check if back-up lights turn on when shift lever is in "R" (Reverse) position. If engine starts as specified and back-up lights come on as indicated, system is okay. If engine does not start as specified or back-up lights do not come on, repeat step  1 , perform A/T GEAR POSITION INDICATOR INPUT TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS, or replace A/T gear position switch.
