Test C: Shift-On-The-Fly System Generates Gear Noises

  1. Check TOD indicator. If indicator displays correct status, go to next step. If TOD indicator does not display correct status, see FAULT DIAGNOSIS FROM TOD INDICATOR  . Go to next step.
  2. Check for DTC 28, 32 or 33. If DTC 28, 32 or 33 is present, go to appropriate trouble code test. If DTC 28, 32 or 33 are not present, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ECU 30-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ECU connector pins No. 1 and 20. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  5 .
  4. Place 4WD switch in 2WD position. Raise left front tire off ground. If front axle gears are disengaged and front driveshaft does not turn when left front tire is turned, problem is intermittent. Go to step  6 . If front axle gears are not disengaged and/or front driveshaft turns, shift-on-the fly system has failed. Repair front drive axle.
  5. Check battery voltage. If battery voltage is not at proper level, repair battery circuit and/or replace battery. If battery voltage is okay, repair charging circuit.
  6. Ensure all mechanical and electrical components are mounted correctly. If all components are mounted correctly, test is complete. Recheck system operation. If any components are not mounted correctly, repair or replace as needed. Repeat drive test and see if symptom is repeated.
