Removal & Installation: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Honda Passport, 2001 Honda Passport, 2000 Honda Passport, 1999 Honda Passport, and 1998 Honda Passport. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For correct timing belt installation, lettering on belt must be able to be read as viewed from the front of the vehicle. Also, note arrow on belt which indicates direction of rotation.
- Align groove on crankshaft sprocket with mark on oil pump. See Figure.NOTE: Crankshaft timing pulley may have a Green mark 180 degrees from it's keyway. Do not use this mark to set crankshaft position.
- Turn right cylinder's (passenger side) camshaft pulley clockwise with a socket and ratchet. (The pulley clicks and stops several times.) Stop pulley when it's green mark aligns with the valve cover timing mark. See Fig 1.NOTE: You may need to rotate the camshaft pulley up to 4 complete turns before its green mark aligns directly with the valve cover timing mark.
- Turn left cylinder bank's (driver side) camshaft pulley clockwise with a socket and ratchet. (The pulley clicks and stops several times.) Stop the pulley when it's Green mark aligns with the timing belt cover bolt hole (9 o'clock position on cylinder head). See Fig 2.NOTE: You may need to rotate the camshaft pulley up to 4 complete turns before its green mark aligns directly with the valve cover timing mark.
- Rotate left cylinder bank's camshaft pulley clockwise another 1/4 turn to align it's Green mark with the valve cover timing mark.
- With Green direction arrows on timing belt pointing clockwise, slip belt over right camshaft pulley so it's solid white line (the line closest to the direction arrows) aligns with mark on pulley. Secure belt to pulley with a large binder clip. Wrap timing belt around bottom of water pump pulley, and draw it tight.
- Slip timing belt over left camshaft pulley so it's other solid white line (the one farthest from direction arrows) aligns with mark on pulley. Secure belt to pulley with a large binder clip. Wrap timing belt around inner side of idler pulley, then slip belt over crankshaft timing pulley with it's dotted white line aligned to Green mark on crankshaft timing pulley.NOTE: For correct belt stretch, dotted line must meet Green mark on crankshaft timing pulley at the 9 o'clock position. If there isn't enough slack to slip belt over pulley in correct position, turn crankshaft a few degrees counterclockwise, install belt, then turn crankshaft back to 9 o'clock position.
- Place tensioner pusher in a soft-jawed vise, then slowly compress tensioner pusher pin until it lines up with the 2 small holes in tensioner pusher housing. Insert a straightened heavy duty paper clip through holes in housing. This will hold pin in it's compressed position. See Fig 3.
- Install tensioner on engine with locking pin in place by installing lower bolt first. Then push tensioner pusher up against tensioner pulley and install upper bolt. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove locking pin from timing belt tensioner. Remove clips from camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
- Rotate crankshaft 3 turns clockwise. Ensure timing marks are still aligned.
- Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and install timing belt covers. Ensure rubber sealing bushings are installed on timing belt cover bolts. See Fig 4.
- Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten center bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install cooling fan pulley. Install power steering pump. Install cooling fan. Install serpentine drive belt idler pulley and tensioner assemblies. Install radiator fan shroud. Connect negative battery cable.
