Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Disconnect instrument cluster connector I-9. Use oscilloscope to check waveform at connector I-9 terminal No. 9 (Black/Red wire) with engine running at 3000 RPM. See Figure . Normal waveform will be between 4.3 and 0.4 volts with a cycle of 6.7 milliseconds. If waveform is normal, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If waveform is not normal, go to next step.
  2. Use DVOM and check for continuity between instrument cluster connector I-9 terminal No. 9 and PCM connector C2 terminal C10 (Black/Red wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair if necessary. If continuity is indicated, replace PCM.
