4L Mode Is Displayed With Transfer Lever In 2H Or Tod Mode

  1. Turn ignition on. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in high position. If 5 volts is present, go to next step. If 5 volts is not present, go to step  7 .
  2. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in neutral position. If no voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is present, go to step  7 .
  3. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in 4L position. If no voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is present, go to step  7 .
  4. Place 4WD switch in 2H position. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 19 and 25. If 12 volts is present, go to next step. If 12 volts is not present, replace ECU. Go to step  16 .
  5. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 19 and 26. If 12 volts is present, go to next step. If 12 volts is not present, replace ECU. Go to step  16 .
  6. Backprobe ECU connector and measure voltage between ECU connector terminals No. 19 and 27. If 12 volts is present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS  . Go to step  16 . If 12 volts is not present, replace ECU. Go to step  16 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU connector. Check for continuity between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in neutral position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, go to step  10 .
  8. Check for continuity between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in 4L position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, go to step  10 .
  9. Check for continuity between ECU connector terminals No. 9 and 19 with transfer lever in high position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, replace ECU. Go to step  16 .
  10. Disconnect 9-pin H17 connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check for continuity between H17 connector terminal No. 6 and 12-pin B48 connector terminal No. 11, with transfer lever in neutral position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, go to step  13 .
  11. Check for continuity between H17 connector terminal No. 6 and 12-pin B48 connector terminal No. 11, with transfer lever in 4L position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, go to step  13 .
  12. Check for continuity between H17 connector terminal No. 6 and 12-pin B48 connector terminal No. 11, with transfer lever in high position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If no continuity exists, repair short to ground in Green/Blue between connectors H17 and B49. Go to step  16 .
  13. Disconnect 12-pin M27 connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check for continuity between M27 connector terminal No. 12 and ground, with transfer lever in neutral position. If no continuity exists, repair 4L switch circuit and/or ground. Go to step  16 . If continuity exists, go to next step.
  14. Check for continuity between M27 connector terminal No. 12 and ground, with transfer lever in 4L position. If no continuity exists, repair 4L switch circuit and/or ground. Go to step  16 . If continuity exists, go to next step.
  15. Check for continuity between M27 connector terminal No. 12 and ground, with transfer lever in high position. If continuity exists, repair 4H switch circuit and/or ground. Go to next step. If no continuity exists, repair short to ground in Green/Blue wire. Go to next step.
  16. Ensure all mechanical and electrical components are mounted correctly. If all components are mounted correctly, test is complete. Recheck system operation. If any components are not mounted correctly, repair or replace as needed. Repeat drive test and see if symptom is repeated.
