Removal (Passport & Rodeo 2WD)

  1. Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cooling fan. Place shift lever in Neutral position. Remove shift lever knob, console assembly and insulation. Remove shift lever grommet and dust cover. Remove shift lever cover bolts and shift lever. Cover hole to prevent entry of dirt. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove suspension crossmember bolts. Remove starter. Remove clutch release cylinder bolts. Mark drive shaft for installation reference. Disconnect drive shaft flange at rear axle. Remove center bearing retainer bolts. Remove drive shaft and center bearing as an assembly.
  3. Remove exhaust pipe bracket bolt from side of transmission. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. Unplug electrical connector from transmission. Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove clutch housing dust cover.
  4. Attach engine hoist and lifting sling. Remove rear engine mount bolts. Remove center crossmember and exhaust pipe. Raise engine and transmission slightly. Support transmission with transmission jack.
  5. On models with pull-type clutch plate, clutch release bearing must be disengaged from pressure plate. To disengage clutch release bearing from pressure plate, use Clutch Release Bearing Remover (J-39207 ). See Figure. Pull clutch release lever rearward and insert bearing remover through access hole. Wedge bearing remover between release bearing and pressure plate and twist to disengage. See Figure.
  6. Separate transmission from engine and remove from vehicle. Mark pressure plate and flywheel for installation reference. Support clutch assembly with clutch aligner. Remove pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern. Remove clutch assembly.
