Pinion Flange & Oil Seal: Installation

  1. Install collapsible spacer and front pinion bearing. Check pinion flange sealing surface for damage. Apply lubricant to sealing surfaces of NEW seal. Using seal driver, install seal. Apply sealant to pinion shaft splines.
  2. Install pinion flange so reference mark aligns with pinion shaft mark. Install washer and NEW nut. Tighten pinion nut until correct pinion starting torque is acheived. Correct pinion starting torque should be 3-6 INCH lbs. (.4-.6 N.m) for 1997 vehicles or 10-14 INCH lbs. (1.1-1.6 N.m) for 1998 vehicles.
  3. To acheive this measurement, tighten pinion nut to 181-217 Ft. lbs. on 1997 vehicles or 220-281 Ft. lbs. (298-380 N.m) on 1998 vehicles. Do not use impact wrench to tighten pinion nut. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
