Test A-5: Braking Sound From Hydraulic Unit (Brakes Released)

NOTE: A sound may be heard from hydraulic unit the first time vehicle begins to move forward after engine start, or when moving slower than 6 MPH. Sound is caused by ABS self-check and is normal operation. Also, ABS may operate without depressing brake pedal under certain conditions such as: clutch operation, high-speed turns, poor road conditions, when entering a driveway, or during excessive engine RPM (greater than 5000 RPM).
  1. If sound is heard after vehicle starts to move and is not the first engine start, or when vehicle speed is greater than 6 MPH, go to next step.
  2. Check wheel speed sensor and toothed ring condition. Check for looseness or powdered iron sticking to components. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  3. Check wheel speed sensor output. See TEST C-1: SENSOR OUTPUT INSPECTION under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair as necessary. If wheel speed sensors and harnesses are okay, replace EHCU.
