Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Test

  1. Check fuse No. 1 (10-amp) in underdash fuse/relay block. Check continuity between 22-pin gauge assembly harness connector "C",terminal C11 and ground terminals (G401, G402 and G404). See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Check if DTC P0720 is set. See TESTS W/CODES article. Repair as necessary. If fuse and ground connections are okay, and DTC P0720 is not set, go to next step.
  2. Raise and support front of vehicle. Disconnect gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector "C". Connect DVOM positive lead to harness connector terminal C6 (Blue/White wire) and negative lead to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ignition on. Place transaxle in Neutral. Block one of the front wheels. Slowly rotate other wheel to about 3 MPH. If voltage pulses 0-5 volts or greater, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse 0-5 volts or greater, replace gauge assembly.
  3. Disconnect gauge assembly 32-pin harness connector "A". Connect DVOM positive lead to harness connector terminal No. 9 (Blue/White wire) and negative lead to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ignition on. Place transaxle in Neutral. Block one of the front wheels. Slowly rotate other wheel to about 3 MPH. If voltage pulses 0-5 volts or greater, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse 0-5 volts or greater, repair open in Blue/White wire between gauge assembly and PCM or integrated control unit, or cruise control unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Check for continuity between ground and gauge assembly 32-pin harness connector "A" terminal No. 9 (Blue/White wire). If continuity exists, repair short in Blue/White wire between gauge assembly and PCM or integrated control unit, or cruise control unit. Recheck system operation. If continuity does not exist, check for bent, loose or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace faulty PCM.
