Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Test

  1. Check for blown fuse No. 1 (10-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Disconnect VSS 3-pin connector. Connect Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3020A) to engine wiring harness. Connect Red clip of test harness to positive lead of DVOM. Using DVOM, check for continuity between Red clip of test harness clip and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire.
  2. Connect other test harness connector to VSS. Connect White clip of test harness to positive lead of DVOM, and Red clip of test harness to negative lead of DVOM. Turn ignition on. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Yellow wire between VSS and underdash fuse/relay box.
  3. Connect Green clip of test harness to positive lead of DVOM, and Red clip of test harness to negative lead of DVOM. Turn ignition on. If reading of 5 volts or more exists, go to next step. If a reading of less than 5 volts exists, repair open in Orange wire between VSS, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM) and cruise control unit.
  4. Turn ignition off. Raise and support front of vehicle. Turn ignition on, and shift transaxle into Neutral. Block one wheel, and slowly rotate other wheel. If voltage pulses from zero and 5 or more volts, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse as specified, replace VSS.
  5. Disconnect speedometer connector. Block one wheel, and slowly rotate other wheel. Using DVOM, check voltage between speedometer connector Orange wire and ground. If voltage pulses, replace speedometer. If voltage does not pulse, repair open in Orange wire between VSS and speedometer.
