Wheel Bearing Preload: 2WD

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove caliper and use wire to position aside. Remove hub cover and lock washer. See Fig 1 . Tighten hub nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m) while rotating hub. Loosen hub nut, then retighten until rotor has no free play.
  2. Attach spring scale to wheel stud. See Figure . Tighten hub nut (while pulling on scale) until scale indicates preload of 4.4-5.5 lbs. (2-3 kg) for new bearing and new seal. If reusing old bearing with a new seal, tighten hub nut until scale indicates preload of 2.6-4.0 lbs. (1-2 kg). Install lock washer and hub cover.
