Removal & Installation (4WD With Automatic Locking Hubs)

  1. Shift transfer case lever to 2H position, and move vehicle back and forth several feet. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove caliper, and wire aside. Remove clutch housing assembly through bolts from cap.
    NOTE: Note position and alignment of drive clutch components for reassembly reference. Ensure drive clutch assemblies are installed on correct side of vehicle.
  2. Remove clutch housing assembly. If necessary, separate components. Remove snap ring, shim(s), drive clutch assembly, inner cam and lock washer. See Figure .
  3. Using Hub Nut Wrench (J-36827), remove adjusting nut. Remove outer bearing and rotor. Remove oil seal. If bearing races need replacing, drive bearing races from hub using punch and hammer. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW oil seal. Adjust wheel bearing preload. See WHEEL BEARING PRELOAD  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
