Removal (4WD)

  1. Remove battery. Place transmission shift lever in Neutral. Place transfer case shift lever in "H" position. Remove front console. Slide transmission and transfer case shift lever boots upward on levers. Remove gearshift and 4WD transfer case lever mounting bolts. Remove shift levers. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Drain transmission and transfer case. Remove transfer case skid plate. Mark drive shafts for installation reference. Remove front and rear drive shafts. Remove starter. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove exhaust hanger from transmission.
  3. With engine supported, remove rear crossmember. Lower transmission. Remove engine-to-transmission mounting bolts and nuts. Disconnect speedometer cable and ground cable at transmission. Pull transmission and transfer case backward to clear clutch assembly and remove transmission and transfer case as an assembly.
  4. Mark pressure plate and flywheel for installation reference. Support clutch assembly with clutch aligner. Remove pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern. Remove clutch assembly.
