Removal (DOHC)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove upper timing belt cover. See Fig 1
.
- Support engine. Remove engine mounting bracket located at timing belt cover. Rotate crankshaft and position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" timing mark on timing belt cover.

- Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets are aligned with cylinder head surface. See Fig 2
. Disconnect front exhaust pipe. Remove bolts attaching torque rod bracket to cylinder block. Remove bolt attaching torque rod to vehicle frame. Remove torque rod and bracket as an assembly.
- Remove engine stiffener brace. See Fig 3
. Remove flywheel dust cover. Hold flywheel while removing crankshaft pulley bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. See Fig 1
. Remove lower timing belt cover.
- Ensure timing mark (notch) on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump. See Fig 2
. Loosen tensioner pulley bolt 1/2 turn. Rotate tensioner pulley clockwise.
- Mark timing belt's direction of rotation if reusing belt. Remove timing belt. If removing camshaft sprockets, hold camshaft on flat area near camshaft lobe while loosening sprocket retaining bolt. Remove crankshaft and camshaft sprockets (if necessary).
