Removal (DOHC)

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Mark hood and hood hinge for reassembly reference.
  2. Remove hood. Drain coolant. Drain transaxle oil. On turbo vehicles, remove intercooler. See INTERCOOLER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On all vehicles, remove accelerator cable from throttle valve and upper intake manifold. Disconnect breather hose from air intake duct.
  3. Disconnect air intake duct from throttle valve. Remove air cleaner cover and element. Remove air cleaner body. Disconnect MAP sensor vacuum hose from sensor. Disconnect vacuum hose for brake booster.
  4. Disconnect 2 canister vacuum hoses from upper intake manifold and throttle valve. Remove bracket that supports 2 canister pipes and MAP sensor pipe from upper intake manifold.
  5. Disconnect 2 wiring harness connectors (12-pin and 16-pin) near left front strut tower. Disconnect ignition coil wire. Disconnect bonding cable connector from thermostat housing flange.
  6. Remove ignition coil with battery bracket. Disconnect ground cable from left inner fender panel. Disconnect positive cable in fuse box. Disconnect cooling fan harness connector.
  7. Disconnect 2 battery harness connectors near front of battery. Disconnect O2 sensor harness connector. Disconnect ground cables from upper intake manifold. Disconnect bonding cable terminal from right side of induction control assembly.
  8. On A/T vehicles, disconnect 4 A/T harness connectors at A/T assembly. Remove cotter pin and clip from shift lever. Remove transmission shift cable lever.
  9. On M/T vehicles, loosen 2 adjusting nuts and remove clutch cable. Remove cotter pin and clip from shift cable bracket. Remove transmission shift cable.
  10. On all vehicles, disconnect heater hoses. Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove upper radiator hose. Disconnect fuel supply and return hoses.
  11. Remove engine coolant reservoir. Remove power steering belt. Remove 2 bolts from power steering pump bracket. Without disconnecting power steering pump hoses, position pump and bracket out of way.
  12. Remove A/C compressor belt (if equipped). Remove 2 bolts attaching A/C compressor to engine. Without disconnecting A/C compressor lines, position A/C compressor out of way.
  13. Disconnect lower radiator hose. Disconnect 2 A/T oil cooler lines (if equipped). Remove cooling fan and fan shroud. Lift and support vehicle. Remove front wheels.
  14. Loosen (DO NOT remove) strut tower nuts on both strut towers. On turbo vehicles, remove hub nut from left front wheel. On all vehicles, remove lower ball joint pinch bolts from control arm. Using Tie Rod End Remover (J-21687-02), remove tie rods from steering knuckle arm.
    NOTE: DO NOT damage transaxle oil seal when removing drive axles from transaxle.
  15. Using a pry bar, remove drive axles from transaxle. Remove undercover from under radiator. Disconnect exhaust pipe. Using an engine hoist, support engine and transaxle assembly.
  16. On turbo vehicles, remove heat shield from exhaust manifold converter. On all vehicles, disconnect torque rod from center beam. Remove damper weight from rear engine mount. Remove center bolt from rear engine mount. Remove left side engine mount.
  17. Remove cruise control pump and Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) assembly (if equipped). Remove right side engine mount. On M/T vehicles, disconnect center bearing support bracket from cylinder bracket. On turbo vehicles, disconnect boost meter hose. On all vehicles, remove engine assembly (with transmission) from vehicle.
CAUTION: DO NOT reuse axle shaft nut. Install NEW nut on axle shaft. Apply grease to axle shaft threads and nut-to-hub contact surfaces before installing. Stake axle shaft nut after tightening to specification.
