Removal (SOHC)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Support engine. Remove right engine mount. Remove power steering and alternator belts. Remove timing belt cover. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs and clips.
  2. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove PCV hoses from valve cover. Remove valve cover bolts, valve cover and gasket. Rotate crankshaft so No. 4 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke.
  3. Ensure timing mark on camshaft pulley aligns with cylinder head. See Figure . Loosen timing belt tension pulley. Remove timing belt from camshaft pulley. Remove camshaft pulley.
  4. Disconnect electrical connections at distributor. Remove distributor cap. Mark rotor-to-distributor housing position and housing-to-cylinder head position. Remove retaining bolt and distributor assembly.
  5. Remove rocker arm assembly. See ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove camshaft and seal.
