Timing Chain (2.8L): Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove water pump. See WATER PUMP  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove power steering pump and mounting bracket (if equipped).
  2. Remove pulley from vibration damper. Remove vibration damper bolt. Using Puller (J-23523-E or J-24420-B), remove vibration damper.
  3. Remove front cover bolts, front cover and gasket. Rotate crankshaft so timing marks align. See Figure .
    NOTE: Before removing timing chain, measure timing chain wear to determine if components need to be replace.
  4. To check timing chain wear, measure distance between timing chain and chain damper. See Figure . Pull timing chain away from chain damper, and measure distance. If timing chain can be pulled away from chain damper by more than 3/8", replace timing chain.
  5. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain. If crankshaft sprocket needs replacing, use Sprocket Puller (J-5825-A) to remove crankshaft sprocket.
