Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. Ensure main bearing caps are numbered for location reference. Note that arrow on cap points toward front of engine.
  2. On 2.8L, main journal and connecting rod journal diameters are determined by number of dots stamped on crankshaft. On all models, ensure journal diameter and bearing clearance are within specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. When installing main bearing caps, ensure arrow on cap points toward front of engine. Before installing rear main bearing cap, apply sealant to rear bearing cap-to-cylinder block surface. DO NOT allow sealant to contact crankshaft.
NOTE: Align thrust bearing before tightening No. 3 main bearing cap bolts to final specification. See THRUST BEARING  .
