Removal (I-Mark)
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove air cleaner assembly and disconnect spark plug wires. Remove valve cover nuts and washers. Remove valve cover. Remove EGR pipe clamp bolt from rear of cylinder head. Raise vehicle and disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
- Drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses at intake manifold and at rear of cylinder head. Disconnect accelerator linkage, fuel line, all necessary wiring and vacuum lines. Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs.
- Rotate camshaft until No. 4 piston is in firing position. Remove distributor cap and mark rotor position on housing. Lock timing chain tensioner by depressing and turning adjuster slide pin 90° clockwise. See Fig 1

NOTE: Turbo models use a belt instead of chain.
- Remove fuel pump drive cam, camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket with timing chain attached. DO NOT separate chain and sprocket. Disconnect air injection pump hose and check valve at exhaust manifold.
- Remove cylinder head-to-front cover bolts. Starting with outer bolts and working inward, loosen cylinder head bolts using Head Bolt Wrench (J-24239-01). Remove cylinder head with manifolds attached. Remove head gasket.
