Oil Pump: Inspection
- Using a feeler gauge, measure tip clearance between inner and outer rotors. Replace oil pump if clearance is greater than .008" (.20 mm). Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between outer rotor and inner wall of pump housing. Replace oil pump if clearance is greater than .01" (.25 mm).
- Install both gears in pump housing. Place a straightedge over pump housing. Insert a feeler gauge between straightedge and rotors. Measure rotor-to-pump cover clearance. Replace oil pump if clearance is greater than .008" (.20 mm).
- Measure outside diameter of drive shaft and inside diameter of shaft hole in pump cover. Compare measurements to determine drive shaft clearance. Replace oil pump if if clearance is greater than .01" (.25 mm).
- Inspect relief valve spring for wear, weakness or damage. Check oil pump body, cover and drive gear for wear, cracking or damage. Replace oil pump if any part is found to be defective.
