Fitting Rings
- Position rings into cylinder bore at a point where bore diameter is smallest. Ring must be square in bore. Measure ring end gap with a feeler gauge. Replace rings if end gap is larger than 0.059" (1.50 mm).
- Using a feeler gauge, check ring side clearance. Ensure rings turn freely in their ring grooves. Replace pistons and rings if side clearance is greater than 0.006" (.15 mm).
- On Impulse models, compression rings will have a piston size mark stamped on top. Standard rings have no marks. A No. 1 compression ring that is .5 mm oversize will have "50" stamped on top. No. 2 compression rings have a "100" stamped on top for the 0.5 mm oversize. All 1.0 mm oversize rings have a "100" stamped on top.
- Standard oil rings on Impulse models are painted Red. The 0.5 mm oversize are painted Blue. The 1.0 mm oversize are painted Yellow.
- Ensure that end gap is correct when installing rings. See Fig 1 . Install oil control rings in this order: expander ring, lower side rail, then upper side rail.
- Position compression rings so that "N", "NPR", or "TOP" mark is upward. Oil control rings are not marked.
