Removal and Installation

REMOVAL 

CAUTION:

Do not remove bolt (A) from lower joint. If bolt is removed lower joint must be replaced.

1. Remove clips and lower joint cover to access lower pinch bolt.
2. Disconnect the harness connectors from steering clutch.
3. Separate steering clutch connector from retainer.
4. Remove nut (A).

5. Remove lower pinch bolt at steering gear.
6. Remove collar and upper pinch bolt at steering column.
7. Remove lower joint.
   CAUTION:

   • When removing lower joint, do not insert a tool, such as a screwdriver, into the yoke groove to pull out the lower joint. If damaged replace lower joint.
   • Do not reuse collar.
   • Do not remove bolt (A) from lower joint. If bolt is removed lower joint must be replaced.

INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL 

• Check lower joint for damage or wear. If damage is found, replace lower joint.
• Check length (A) of lower joint as shown in the illustration if vehicle has been involved in a collision. Replace lower joint if outside specification.

INSTALLATION 

Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION 

• Remove lower joint cover.
• Check that rear cap projection resinous part (B) of the steering gear (2), is centered and not touching either side of the lower joint (1) slit (A).

• If necessary, remove lower joint from steering gear and reinstall. Refer to Removal and Installation.
• On the CONSULT screen, select "EPS/DAST 3" >> "DATA MONITOR" >> "ST ANGLE SENSOR", and then check that the value is within specifications.

  Monitor item	Condition	Standard value
  ST ANGLE SENSOR	Vehicle: Straight-ahead position	ST ANGLE SENSOR ≤ ± 10 °

• If the value is outside specifications, perform the following steps:
  • Remove lower joint cover.
  • Make a matching mark on the lower joint and the steering gear.
  • Remove the pinch bolt and separate the lower joint from the steering gear.
  • While watching the CONSULT screen, rotate the steering wheel one full turn in the direction that brings the value within specification.
    CAUTION:

    Do not move steering gear while lower joint is separated from steering gear.

    NOTE: If initial direction of rotation brings the value further out of specification, rotate in the opposite direction.
  • Install lower joint to steering gear and install pinch bolt.
  • Install lower joint cover.
• Perform "ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REPLACING OR REMOVING DAST PARTS". Refer to Special Repair Requirement .
