Removal and Installation
REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Spiral cable may be cut if steering wheel turns while separating steering column and steering gear. Be sure to secure steering wheel using string to avoid turning.
- Remove collar and upper pinch bolt at steering column.CAUTION:
- When removing lower joint, do not insert a tool, such as a screwdriver, into the yoke groove to pull out the lower joint. If damage occurs, replace lower joint.
- Do not reuse collar.
- Remove clips and lower joint cover to access lower pinch bolt.
- Remove lower pinch bolt at steering gear.
- Remove lower joint.CAUTION:
When removing lower joint, do not insert a tool, such as a screwdriver, into the yoke groove to pull out the lower joint. If damage occurs, replace lower joint.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
- Check lower joint for damage or wear. If damage is found, replace lower joint.
- Check length (A) of lower joint as shown in the illustration if vehicle has been involved in a collision. Replace lower joint if outside specification.
Lower joint length (A) : Refer to Lower Joint Length .
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
CAUTION:

- Check that rear cap projection resinous part (B) of the steering gear (2), is centered and not touching either side of the lower joint (1) slit (A).
- Hand tighten pinch bolts, then torque to specification.
