Engine Coolant: Refilling

WARNING: Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high-pressure engine coolant escaping from the radiator. Wrap a thick cloth around the cap. Slowly push down and turn it a quarter turn to allow built-up pressure to escape. Carefully remove the cap by pushing it down and turning it all the way.
  1. Install the following, if removed:
    • Water drain plug

      Water drain plug (1) : 9.8 N.m (1.00 kg-m, 87 in-lb)
    • Reservoir tank, refer to Exploded View .
    • Cooling system hoses, refer to Exploded View .
    • Radiator drain plug, refer to Exploded View .
  2. Set the vehicle heater controls to the full HOT and heater ON positions. Turn the vehicle ignition ON with the engine OFF as necessary to activate the heater mode.
  3. With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, use CONSULT "WORK SUPPORT" mode to perform "ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE". Refer to Component Inspection (Multi-way Control Valve) .
    CAUTION:

    Do not start engine.

NOTE: SYMBOL CONSULT can be used to open the bypass valve on the multi-way control valve.
  4. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant using Tool (A), following the manufacturer's instructions included with the tool.

    Tool number (A) : KV991J0070 (NI-45695-A)
Engine Coolant : Refer to Fluids and Lubricants .
    CAUTION:
    • Use recommended coolant or equivalent.
    • Do not use any cooling system additives such as radiator sealer. Additives may clog the cooling system and cause damage to the engine, transmission or cooling system.
    • The compressed air supply must be equipped with an air dryer.
NOTE: SYMBOL When installing Tool (A) to reservoir tank filler neck, make sure to select the correct size expansion plug (B).

  5. Remove the Tool (A) and top off the cooling system with engine coolant as necessary.
  6. Install the reservoir tank cap.
  7. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature using the following procedure: Start the engine and set the heater control temperature to "FULL HOT". Use CONSULT "WORK SUPPORT" mode to perform "ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE". Refer to Component Inspection (Multi-way Control Valve) .
    NOTE: SYMBOL
    • CONSULT can be used to open the bypass valve on the multi-way control valve.
    • Check that there are no leaks from the drain plug and heater core connections.

Warm up the engine until the bypass valve on the multi-way control valve opens. The warm-up time should be approximately 10 minutes at 3, 000 rpm.

    • Check that the bypass valve on the multi-way control valve is open by touching the radiator hose (lower) and checking that warm engine coolant is flowing.
    CAUTION:

Do not allow the engine to exceed normal operating temperature or engine damage may occur.

NOTE: SYMBOL Check that there are no leaks from the drain plug and heater core connections.
  8. Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
  9. When the engine is cold (approximately 50°C (122°F) or less), remove the reservoir cap and check the engine coolant level. If the level is low, fill with coolant again until it reaches the "MAX" line of the reservoir tank and repeat step 7.
    CAUTION:

Do not spill coolant on any electrical equipment (such as generator) during the operation as damage could result.

  10. When coolant level stabilizes, fill with coolant up to the "MAX" line on the reservoir tank.
