Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Access ECM located behind glove compartment. Disconnect appropriate ECM connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and terminal S4 at ECM connector. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS .
  2. Resistance should be 11-15 ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not as specified, disconnect 10-pin solenoid connector located above PNP switch on side of transaxle. See Figure. Check circuit continuity between ECM connector terminal S4 and solenoid connector terminal No. 8.
  3. If continuity exists, check shift solenoid S4 for malfunction. See appropriate solenoid test under COMPONENT TESTS . If continuity does not exist, check and repair wiring harness or connector between solenoid connector and ECM.
