Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on. Check the O/D OFF indicator light when the O/D main switch is pressed to the ON position. The lamp should illuminate. Check the O/D OFF indicator light when the O/D main switch is pressed once again the lamp should go out. If system operates as specified, problem is intermittent. Check for intermittent condition: Loose terminal tension, corroded terminals, cut or broken wiring or chaffed wiring harness and repair as necessary. If system does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  2. Check the instrument cluster for proper operation. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Check bulb for O/D ON/OFF lamp. If operation is okay, go to next step. If not, repair or replace instrument cluster or bulb.
  3. Disconnect O/D main switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals No. 1 and No. 3 while pressing the O/D switch. See Fig 1. There should be continuity. If not, replace O/D main switch. If okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between ground and the ODMS terminal of the ECM connector. Press O/D switch on. Voltage should be less than one volt. Release the switch. The reading should be battery voltage. If check is within parameters, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If check was not within parameters, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect the ECM connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between ground and terminal ODLP of the ECM connector. Voltage should be between 7.5-14 volts. If reading is within specification, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, replace the wiring harness between the instrument cluster and the ECM, and the wiring harness between the O/D main switch and ground.
