Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Start and warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off. Connect the OBD-II scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn ignition on and turn the OBD-II scan tool or hand-held tester ON. Select the item "LINE PRESS UP" in the ACTIVE TEST and operate the shift solenoid SLT on the OBD-II scan tool or hand-held tester. If line pressure can be raised, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If the line pressure cannot be raised, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect the transmission wire connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between the terminal SLT+ and SLT-. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Resistance should be between 5.0-5.6 ohms, at 68°F (20°C). If readings are within specifications, go to next step. If not, go to step  4.
  3. Connect the transmission wire connector to the transaxle. Disconnect the ECM connector. Measure the resistance between terminals SLT+ and SLT- of ECM connector. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Resistance should be between 5.0-5.6 ohms, at 68°F (20°C). If readings are within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, go to next step.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Disconnect the solenoid connector. Measure the solenoid resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the solenoid connector. Resistance should be between 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C).

Connect battery voltage, with an 21-watt bulb, to terminal No. 1 of the solenoid connector and ground terminal No. 2, then check the movement of the valve. When battery voltage is applied, valve should move out of solenoid. See Figure. When battery positive voltage is removed, valve should move back in. If both checks operated as described, replace transaxle wiring harness and connector. If both checks did not operate as described, replace pressure control solenoid valve.
