Speedometer & VSS Circuit Test

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from transmission, leaving harness connector connected. Disconnect combination meter harness connector N13. See Figure . Using a DVOM set to AC range, measure voltage between connector N13 terminals No. 12 (Brown/White wire) and No. 14 (Light Green/Black wire) while turning VSS pinion quickly. See Figure . If approximately .5 volts does not exist, go to next step. If approximately .5 volts exists, VSS circuit is okay at this time.
  2. Test VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)  under COMPONENT TESTS. If VSS is defective, replace VSS. If VSS is okay, repair open in wiring harness between speedometer and VSS.
