Differential Carrier Overhaul: Disassembly
- Before disassembly, check ring gear backlash, pinion total preload, ring gear runout, side gear thrust washer-to-differential case clearance and gear tooth contact pattern. See Fig 1 and Fig 2

Scribe index marks on side bearing caps and carrier. Remove side lock fingers (if equipped) and side bearing caps. On H233B, remove side bearing adjusters using Side Bearing Adjuster Remover (J-34312). On all models, remove differential case assembly using pry bar. DO NOT mix side bearing caps, races or side adjusters.
- Using Pinion Flange Wrench (KV38104700), remove pinion flange nut. Remove companion flange using puller. Remove ABS sensor (if equipped). Drive out drive pinion using a soft hammer and brass drift (if necessary). Remove drive pinion, rear bearing inner race, spacer and shim as an assembly.
- Remove oil seal. Using press and bearing plates, remove bearing from drive pinion gear. Using a drift, remove front and rear bearing races. Using puller, remove side bearings.
- Keep right and left side components separate for reassembly reference. For LSD models, go to step 8. On all models except LSD, bend back ring gear retaining bolt lock tabs. Remove ring gear bolts by loosening in a diagonal sequence. Using a soft hammer, tap ring gear from differential case.
- Remove differential case bolts by loosening in a diagonal sequence. Mark and separate differential cases "A" and "B" (4-pinion type differential). Drive out pinion shaft lock pin (2-pinion type differential).CAUTION: Mark gears and thrust washers to ensure they are installed in original location.
- Remove pinion shaft, pinion gears, side gears and thrust washers. Identify gears and thrust washers for installation in original positions. Go to CLEANING & INSPECTION.
- On LSD models, attach Adapters (KV38105110 and KV38105120) on differential carrier, and mount assembly in a vise. Using a torque wrench, check rotating torque of LSD. See Fig 3.
- On H190A, LSD rotating torque should be 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 N.m) on new parts or 29-54 ft. lbs. (39-73 N.m.) on used parts. On H233B (1997 Pickup), LSD rotating torque should be 148-177 ft. lbs. (201-240 N.m). On H233B (Except 1997 Pickup), LSD rotating torque should be 65-80 ft. lbs. (88-108 N.m). If LSD rotating torque is not within specification, go to next step. If LSD rotating torque is within specification, do not disassemble LSD.

NOTE: It is NOT necessary to disassemble LSD if rotating torque is within specification. - To disassemble LSD, mark differential cases "A" and "B" for reassembly reference. See Fig 4 or Fig 5. On H233B models, remove side bearing inner cone (if not already removed). Remove ring gear bolts in crisscross pattern. Remove ring gear using a soft hammer. On all models, remove coupling bolts in a crisscross pattern. Separate differential cases "A" and "B". Remove LSD components. Mark component locations for reassembly.
