Cleaning & Inspection

Check gear teeth for scoring, cracking and chipping. If damaged, replace ring gear and drive pinion as a set. Check mating surfaces of differential case, side gears, pinion mate gears, pinion mate shaft, thrust block and thrust washers.
Thoroughly clean bearings. Check bearings for wear, scratches, pitting or flaking. Minor burrs or scratches can be removed using oil stone. Check tapered roller bearings for smooth rotation. Replace outer race and inner cone as a set, if necessary.
If disassembling LSD, clean discs and plates in solvent and blow dry with compressed air. Inspect discs and plates for wear, nicks, burrs or warpage. Check friction discs and plates for warpage with dial indicator. Maximum warpage is .003" (.08 mm). Replace as necessary.
Using a micrometer, measure difference (wear) between frictional surfaces and projected portions of friction discs, friction plates, spring discs and spring plates. If difference (wear) is greater than .004" (.10 mm), replace disc or plate with one of same thickness as projected portion.
