Speedometer & VSS Circuit Test: Q45

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from transmission, leaving harness connector connected. Disconnect instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector N14. See Figure . Using a DVOM set to AC range, measure voltage between terminals No. 8 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (Brown/White wire) at instrument panel harness connector N14 while turning VSS pinion quickly. See Figure . If approximately 5 volts AC does not exist, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts AC exists, VSS circuit is okay at this time.
  2. Test VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)  under COMPONENT TESTS. If VSS is defective, replace VSS. If VSS is okay, repair open in Light Green/Black and/or Brown/White wires.
