Description & Operation
WARNING:
Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
The instrument cluster consists of the following major components: speedometer, tachometer, gauges and warning indicators. All models use a permanent magnet, generator-type Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) located on transmission. Instrument cluster can be removed with gauges installed.
Instrument cluster converts input signals received from the coolant temperature sending unit, fuel gauge sending unit and vehicle speed sensor to control operation of coolant temperature gauge, fuel gauge and speedometer, respectively. Operation of the tachometer is based on input signal received from the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
