1997 200SX (2.0L)

  1. Ensure selector lever is not damaged. Check power source. With ignition on, use voltmeter to backprobe Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU) harness connector. Measure voltage between terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and battery supply power source.
  2. Check ignition signal. With ignition off, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green wire) and ground. No voltage should exist. Turn ignition to ON position. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and ignition switch power source.
  3. Check ground circuit. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect SLCU harness connector. Check continuity between terminal No. 7 (Black wire) and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
  4. Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Check park position switch. See PARK POSITION SWITCH  in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.
  5. Connect SLCU harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Red/White wire) on SLCU harness connector. Depress brake pedal. No voltage should exist. Move shift selector to any other position with brake pedal depressed. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness for open or short. Repair as necessary.
  6. Check brake switch signal. With ignition on, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 8 (Red/Green Wire) and ground. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between SLCU and brake switch. If circuit is okay, inspect brake light switch.
  7. Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Using voltmeter, backprobe shift lock solenoid harness connector. See Figure . Measure voltage between terminal No. 7 (Blue/Orange wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect shift lock solenoid harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black Wire) on solenoid harness connector. Continuity should exist. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, inspect shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID  in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.
