Tachometer Circuit Test

  1. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 41 of instrument cluster connector No. 3. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to step 3). If battery volta ge is not present, go to next step.
  2. Check for faulty fuse No. 4 (7.5-amp), located in passenger compartment fuse block. Also, check wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster for an open or short. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 31 of instrument cluster connector No. 3. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair Black wire for an open or poor connection.
  4. Start engine. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between terminal No. 29 of instrument cluster connector No. 2 and terminal No. 31 of instrument cluster connector No. 3 with engine at idle and at 2000 RPM. See Figure . Voltage should increase as engine RPM increases, and decrease as engine RPM decreases. If operation is as specified, replace tachometer. If operation is not as specified, check White/Green wire for an open or short between ECM and instrument cluster. Repair as necessary.
