Speedometer & VSS Circuit Test
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 41 of instrument cluster connector No. 3. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to step 3). If battery volta ge is not present, go to next step.
- Check for faulty fuse No. 4 (7.5-amp), located in passenger compartment fuse block. Also, check wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster for an open or short. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 14 of instrument cluster connector No. 1. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair Black wire for an open or poor connection.
- Remove VSS from transmission. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between terminals No. 8 and 9 of instrument cluster connector No. 1 while quickly turning VSS pinion. See Figure . If reading is about .5 volt, replace speedometer. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between VSS terminals. If resistance is about 250 ohms, check for poor connections between speedometer and VSS. If resistance is not as specified, replace VSS.
