Fuel Gauge Circuit Test
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 41 of instrument cluster connector No. 3. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to step 3). If battery volta ge is not present, go to next step.
- Check for faulty fuse No. 4 (7.5-amp), located in passenger compartment fuse block. Also, check wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster for an open or short. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 14 of instrument cluster connector No. 1. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair appropriate Black wire for an open or poor connection.
- Turn ignition on. Using a fused jumper wire, ground fuel gauge terminal for less than 10 seconds. See Figure . Gauge should move smoothly to full scale ("F") position. Replace fuel gauge if it does not function as described. If gauge functions as described, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and fuel tank gauge unit terminal No. 4 (Black wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair Black wire for an open or poor connection.
- Check for faulty fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace if necessary. If fuel gauge sending unit tests okay, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, check Red/Blue wire between terminal No. 11 of instrument cluster connector No. 1 and fuel tank gauge unit for an open or short. See Figure . Repair as necessary.
