Testing Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Hyundai XG350. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When disconnecting and testing Hydraulic and Electronic Control Unit (HECU) harness connector, be sure to remove harness connector double lock and insert probe into harness side (backprobe). Inserting probe into terminal side will result in a bad connection.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect HECU 25-pin harness connector. HECU is located at right rear corner of engine compartment, on firewall. Check continuity in Tan/White wire between HECU harness connector terminal No. 7 and DLC terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  3 .
  2. Check for and repair open in Tan/White wire between HECU and DLC. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, retest system.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and HECU harness connector terminal No. 9 (Red wire). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  5 .
  4. Check for and repair open or short to ground in Red wire between HECU and fusible link No. 1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, retest system.
  5. Check continuity between ground and HECU harness connector terminal No. 24 (Black wire). If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  7 .
  6. Check for and repair open in Black wire between HECU and ground point G12. Ground point G12 is located on right fenderwell, near HECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, retest system.
  7. Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connection in HECU harness connector. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, retest system.
  8. Replace HECU. See HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, retest system.
